4 Master Plant Dietas Essential for the Shamanic Path

Walking the shamanic path, we may gain wisdom from maestros and maestras, by reading about traditions, and other means, but this is indirect learning. It is the plants themselves who are our core teachers, and it is being in direct relationship with them that we truly build our foundation for spiritual apprenticeship.

A core aspect of developing this base and ongoing development is doing Master Plant Dietas which merge us with plant consciousness and create a direct alignment with their wisdom and depth of relationship.

Each plant holds its own distinct intelligence, gifts, and means of refining various aspects of the healer. Some support emotional wisdom and steadiness, intuition, or humility while others excel at protection in its many forms, opening the heart, or providing clearing and clarity.

All master plants are incredible guides on this journey, but when we open to them through silence, dreamwork, and discipline, there are certain dietas that are frequently considered foundational for those who are developing in sacred service. In this blog, I will explore a handful of the many examples who are often among those worked with in this way.

Why Certain Dietas Become Foundational

Certain plants become our core teachers for a variety of reasons. Some plants focus on our hearts, opening and strengthening them and showing us how to live and move from that center. Some sharpen perception or build our psychic and intuitive senses helping us to tap into energies and ways of perceiving what is around us and connecting with us.

Many plants work with protection of our own energy or spaces and even what protection actually means. Yet others help to regulate and strengthen the nervous system supporting our mind and body to feel solid and centered which is essential for much of the other work we do. There are plants that support grounding, ancestral healing, finding balance, and a myriad of other specialties, all of which can be central to a person stepping into guiding others on this path as well as on our own healing journey.

We most often do not exactly choose the plant we will diet, but rather we are called by them and so they in essence choose us. As they are the teachers, they also know which of them is best to address whatever someone needs at that particular time, and they also often come in a particular order that is significant especially when reflected on after the fact.

For example, someone may have an intention of working on expansion, but a very grounding plant might come in first to help you stay tethered to the earth before blasting into the ethers. You are still receiving exactly what you asked the plants for, but by following their guidance you come to it in a better way. You may need softness to learn strength or need to regulate your nervous system before being able to hold space for others.

And here is where we see that this path requires inner readiness and an openness to the guidance of these masters if we want to be in service with them. While the plants always want us to be empowered, there is a balance of that with ethical maturity necessary to witness a bigger picture and understand that their intelligence is guiding us in a way we may not understand until the process unfolds. Building that trust is another core ability we gain from doing these dietas and forming solid bonds with these beings.

Bobinsana – The Plant of the Heart

One plant often worked with early on the shamanic path is Bobinsana who was actually my first dieta, so I have a special love for her. Known as Sirenita which means little mermaid, she is intricately linked to the water element and so works deeply with emotions and relationships. She invites us to soften, to be gentle and loving to ourselves, and release the protective layers that keep us from our vulnerability. While she is gentle and loving, she can also be a challenging diet because so many of us struggle to love ourselves and are full of self judgement. She has no time for that, and with deep love, she will hold us there until we loosen and let that go.

While heart opening and self-love is often central with her, this flows outward as well as she teaches us empathy and clarity in our relationships. The way we see ourselves and others is connected, and she can hold us in examining both side of that. She is strong but also soft, and can be subtle working through dreams and feelings.

Digging into the depths of our hearts is central to beginning this kind of work, which is one of the core reasons she is so regularly an early ally. Learning to work through these emotions and become emotionally stable is essential for ourselves and to be steady when working with others and supporting their emotional processes.

Ajo Sacha – The Plant of Strength and Protection

Known as “the opener of the way,” it’s no wonder that Ajo Sacha is often one of the first plants to come to people beginning this path. They are associated with hunting both as in procuring food in the jungle as well as symbolically helping to hunt down your true self, direction in life, or deeper insights. In this way, they support energetic and mental clarity, a sense of direction and purpose, and development of discernment.

Ajo Sacha is wonderful for detoxification of the physical body as well as spiritual and energetic purification. They are antiviral, full of minerals and nutrients, and strengthen the body with stamina and vitality for further work. The energetic clearing can remove unhealthy patterns, cleanse us of foreign energies, and bring spiritual purification and a clearing of the inner field that prepares us for ceremony work.

When I dieted them years ago, I remember clearly the sense of fortitude I had while in that container. I was working a very physical job at the time, and they supported my body and spirit in feeling full of vigor and endurance.

This strengthening and support of the physical body is reflected in the protective elements of this plant. They not only clear and also protect the energy, but empower us to protect ourselves and create proper boundaries. They are said to drive away evil spirits and so are often hung in bunches in homes, they guard against soul loss, and they banish negative energies within us or in a space. When you add in that they are frequently used to cleanse and prepare the body and spirit for ceremony and ritual, this plant teacher has a clear and central role in shamanic work.

Mapacho – The Plant of Intention & Spirit Communication

While many of us have grown up with a negative view of tobacco, indigenous peoples around the world have revered him for protection, setting intentions, prayer, and connecting with the spirit world. Mapacho, the wild tobacco of the jungle, must be used with intention and respect or the dark elements will present themselves. This is central to his teachings though as he clearly shows us the power and importance of intention.

Smoking is the most common and significant example of how we can see this as well as how our intentions can be both conscious and unconscious. If we are unconsciously coming to tobacco and using him in a form that abuses his medicine like commercial western cigarettes, we get that energy in return in the form of disease. The addictive quality that he has shows us that if we use him abusively and without sacredness, we develop an addiction and dependency.

However, if we work with mapacho with a clear intention and when we are called by him, he can support us with grounding, protection, clearing energy and spaces, and connecting to the spirit realm. He is an essential master teacher, but he is a powerful and demanding guide who requires commitment and discipline.

In fact, he is essential in communicating with the spirit world. Indigenous traditions around the world smoke or blow mapacho as a part of their prayers, and he is said to carry the prayers to heaven. He also assists us in connecting with other plants and spirit beings, so his role in ceremony and ritual is undeniable. He is a connector, an amplifier, and a protector. It is likely that he is not the first dieta for most people as he requires fortitude and some experience, but for anyone stepping into guiding ceremonies or similar work, he is a powerful ally.

Additionally, Mapacho is said to build strength, and while his tea can be fatal at the wrong dosage, when done with a trained and knowledgeable guide, you get stronger as the dieta goes on. However, the physical experience of getting stronger may at times knock you out. While on this dieta there were times where I felt deeply tethered to the earth, but I could not get up from laying on the ground. I was not frightened, but certainly incapacitated and glad that I was in a safe space to feel the depths of my connection to the earth while deep in Mapacho’s hold. My experience with him not only deepened my relationship with his spirit but also that of many other plants, my guides, myself, and the earth.

Rose – The Teacher of Soft Power

They don’t call Rose the Queen of the Flowers for no reason, and she has entire lineages dedicated to her. She is a core ally for me, and while she is wonderful as an early dieta, I have seen a pattern with myself and many others where she regularly comes back for additional dietas together. A true embodiment of the divine feminine, Rose holds a special place among the master plants in opening our hearts, reconnecting to our feminine energy, and developing a trust that is foundational to walking this path.

While Rose has tons of superpowers, for the purposes here, I will focus first on how she welcomes us to soften. Trusting that we are safe in her embrace, we are able to soften our protective layers and learn to receive. So many of us that are called to be healing or ceremony guides in whatever form are prepared fully to give, but we are often the last ones who remember to also receive. This is really important because unless we allow ourselves to receive love and to do that work ourselves, we cannot truly support others in that process. Like her velvety petals, Rose illustrates the beauty of softness and how we are safe in that feminine softness with those protective thorns underneath reminding us of boundaries and protection.

As a master or unity and duality, Rose holds the key to the learning to balance. She effortlessly portrays how sometimes allowing softness can be intense, learning to love ourselves may require seeing all of the ways that we don’t do that, or that guarding our heart perpetuates our feeling that we need to protect it while allowing it to open allows in the connections that make us feel safe and loved.

In this way, her teachings can be both simple and profound, and they can prepare us to integrate the lessons from other plants. When we can open our hearts and willingness to receive, our hearts and minds are prepared to accept deeper and deeper truths.

Rose also brings us back to the body, which when walking a spiritual path can be easily forgotten but is crucial to maintain. When our heads are stuck in the world of spirit, we experience but don’t come to a grounded understanding. She begins and ends in the body, the spiritual experience is felt and known there, and the lessons are embodied.

It is that very embodiment that is a core of her wisdom as well as another capacity she teaches that is crucial for this work. When integrating other dietas, ceremony work, or other spiritual processes, having this base of embodying our spirituality is essential. It’s where the real healing happens and true shifts and evolution take place.

How These Plants Work Together

As I have explained, each of these plants have their own unique gifts and capabilities. However, the true magic unfolds as we integrate not only each of their individual teachings but how they work together. A forest is all of the plants living in interaction and harmony together, and this is reflective of how their wisdom works.

Plants often come in for us in sequences that feel like one is passing the baton to another, building on what we have learned in previous diets. Or perhaps as you walk the path, you work with numerous heart opening plants, but they each touch the same aspect of that in their own way allowing you to heal your heart in a more profound and impactful way.

Also, opening your heart creates strength and self-love is protection. Softness and strength each require the other to be fully felt and embodied. In this way, the lessons of the plants do not stand alone, but intertwine and build on each other. If the trees have taught me anything, its that the wisdom of the forest is inherent in the wisdom of each plant as well as the representation of all of their wisdom together.

They have framed it to me as the wisdom not only of the plants but of all living things is woven together, so when we work with these master plants we are not only learning from them, but we are getting a thread of the wisdom of the entire earth.

This is then a tether back to the body as we are also one of those threads. Building these relationships with the plants is literally reweaving the wisdom and connections of the earth into our own vessel. We embody that wisdom through these connections and carry it for future generations and for the earth herself as we are her and she is us. These teachings are thereby lived, not just understood.

How this unfolds with be unique to each of us. There are so many master plants around the world, we each will have our own allies that come to support us. Some people may diet one plant over and over again, others may diets numerous plants, and for many people it is a combination of working with a multiple plants but having a few they diet repeatedly. The path, the lessons shared, and how they are shared is individual, but we are all weaving the medicine of the earth together as one.

Important Considerations Before Beginning Dieta

Stepping into the world of master plant dietas is absolutely life changing and a truly magical path of growth, healing, and connection. However, it does require protection and support especially when first beginning. An experienced guide will help you to prepare for your dieta, open and close the portal with the plant, send you protection throughout the experience as well as check on your connection with the plant and pass on any messages the plant may bring through.

Having the support of someone who has been doing these for a long time is crucial to your experience. While these are beautiful experiences, they often bring growth through being challenging, bringing up the things we have avoided looking at, and throwing us into moments that can be confusing or overwhelming.

When in these spaces we are also energetically very open, so having someone who is there to support us through these processes and make sure w are safe is highly recommended for you to have the healing experience. They will also support you in the integration of the dieta which is its own part of the process and can at times be equally challenging.

Your guide can also help you with figuring out the right timing for you as well as feeling into what plant wants to come through for what you are working on. Being ready and prepared for the experience is key to building the relationship with the plant and receiving what intentions you set.

Taking time for integration and for down time between dietas is also important. It’s easy to feel like you want to jump into another dieta when you are still working on applying what the last plant had to share or just need to let your body rest first. Learning to really feel into how much and when is a core lesson in itself. The plants and the teachings will come in divine timing when we learn to trust.

Plants Shape the One Who Listens

Remembering that doing this work with the plants is based on relationships helps us to frame the design of this path. It is built by showing up with reverence and partnership with these beings, and those relationships continue to grow even after a dieta is closed especially if we continue to foster those connections. For many, it becomes a lifelong journey of slow, honest transformation constructed in moments of silence and humility over years. With dedication and an open heart, plants like these four essential beings and others like them will prepare us for healing and deeper service.
