The History and Origins of Master Plant Dietas
While plant medicine has only been really known about beyond the Amazon for a number of decades, people from that region have been taught and guided by master plant allies since antiquity. This went much deeper than a simple healing retreat. By building relationships with these plant teachers through the devotion of sacred apprenticeship, healers and shamans were taught the medicine of each plant, learned about the forest and were given knowledge about healing, emotions, earth wisdom, and personal transformation.
By coming to these master plant teachers with humility and respect, the indigenous spiritual leaders became adept at one of the most ancient and sophisticated spiritual technologies on earth. This work required discipline, following strict food and behavioral protocols, and often extended periods of isolation in order to hear the direct communication of the plant spirit with which they were communing.
Let’s investigate the history of these master plant dietas and how this practice has been passed on today. We will also look at how though the practice has gone through adaptations over time it remains one of the most powerful and transformative spiritual paths available to us.
What Is a Master Plant Dieta?
People often confuse a master plant dieta with the ayahuasca diet or a plant based diet, but this process is much more than that. While the food eaten is largely but not completely plant based, this is more than your daily diet choices. The food protocol has much in common with what is typically eaten in preparation for an ayahuasca ceremony, but a master plant dieta is an entire process all in itself.
This is a sacred apprenticeship with a master plant teacher. There are a few dozen master plants traditionally worked with in this way in the jungle, but these days people recognize and diet with master plants all over the world. Nonetheless, the participant is creating a deep and direct relationship with the plant they are dieting. It is possible of course to develop relationships with plants by drinking tea consciously, calling on the plant spirit, sitting with the live plant and connecting to it.
All of these things are a part of a master plant diet, but the signature difference is that it is a union with the plant. When opening a dieta, the spirit of the plant is called in and joins with us in body and spirit. This opens a whole other world of ways the plant spirit can communicate with us. It is also a much deeper connection since there is a marriage or mergence with them.
Listening Beyond Visions: The Discipline of the Dieta Path
Unlike ceremony, this process is not about intoxication or visions, though it is possible to have visions especially when working with certain plants. This is more about listening to the wisdom of the plant, having discipline to follow its guidance, and tune in to the various ways they can communicate through our body talk, dreams, our psychic senses and intuition, and even through conversations we encounter or situations, feelings, or memories that come up while we are working with them.
The myriad of ways they are able to connect to and communicate to us, particularly in the dieta portal, never ceases to amaze me at this point. The healing, growth, transformation, and energetic shifts that can happen in dieta as well as the depths to which we can bond with these magnificent beings is vaster and more incredible than I could have imagined when I began this work myself.
Indigenous Roots of the Dieta Tradition
The roots of master plant dietas originate with indigenous peoples of the Amazon including the Shipibo, Ashaninka, and other tribes. Through time, this practice was also shared with neighboring tribes, and so it has spread in the region. However, the exact point of origin is difficult to find as this has been passed as a living tradition from person to person. While there are some books out there now, it is primarily an oral tradition. This means that it is passed via transmission of knowledge and through an elder guiding the experience to an apprentice. This process holds a special magic as the wisdom is passed through the process itself.
In addition, each person develops their own relationship with each plant, so you have your own experience and receive direct knowledge from the plant spirits. So, in a sense it is the plants that have created, carry, and pass the tradition and its practices. I would say that this is one aspect of this practice that makes it extremely special, and weaves into it special mystery and sacredness. Especially when you consider that humans and plants have been joining together to connect, learn, and build relationships together, this process stands out as a really unique partnership between humanity and the world of plant spirits.
Ancestral Lineage and the Living Transmission of Wisdom
Through this special method, people learned the specific wisdom of particular plants. Many specialize in protection, self-love, finding vision or strength, personal healing, empowerment, etc. Certain plants also have wisdom that helped to train healers, midwives, and spiritual guides. They can open us up to connect with animals, elements, and otherworldly beings as well as the deepest parts of ourselves. No wonder these tribes held these practices in such deep regard and passed them on to each generation.
Further, these diets were essential to many aspects of life in the jungle and protecting the community. Many plants are able to heal the sick and taught the people how to defend again both physical illness as well as energetic or spiritual attack. They kept the people physically well, but also addressed trauma, grief, interpersonal relationship dynamics, and some even helped with hunting and other essential life skills. It is possible that working so closely with these master plants was a core aspect of maintaining the health, wellbeing, and continued life of the community. They were a path of awakening, not just treatment, and supported all aspects of life.
How Master Plant Dietas Were Traditionally Practiced
Traditionally, dietas were done in deep isolation. Often the dietero, the person doing the dieta, lived alone in a hut away from other people. In order to avoid distraction, they would often not even see the person who would deliver them their simple meals on the doorstep. While in some cases, they may have some human interaction, it was often minimal, sometimes only limited to when they joined ayahuasca ceremonies during their process. The intention with this intensity of isolation is to be completely focused on the plant and what they are bringing through to the person. By being in isolation and silence beyond the sounds of nature, the person was able to tune in more to the wisdom being shared by the plant spirit.
The food restrictions are strict and usually eliminates things like salt, sugar, spices, red meat and pork, alcohol and other intoxicating substances, stimulants including coffee, etc. and is comprised of subsiding on certain fruits and vegetables, poultry and fish, and basic grains. It can vary between traditions, but it is an intentionally bland and simple diet. Not only does this food protocol help the body to move through the detoxification that can happen on dieta and clear the body of things that keep energy from flowing, it also avoids food becoming a distraction. Eating this way is eating for subsistence more than enjoyment, so again the attention can be focused on communing with the plant and maintaining a clear and clean vessel for them.
The Discipline of Isolation and Devotion
All of this is done to facilitate the direct communion with the plant. The plant spirit could be contacted through songs, and much of the time in isolation could be spent singing to the plant and having songs come through to the participant from them. Dreams are another way they often bring through information and share their wisdom with us. Typically you limit or eliminate media during dieta, sometimes even books especially if they are not related to what you are working on with the plant. Often all that the participant would have with them in the hut is a notebook and pen to be able to write down what insights and wisdom were transferred from the plant consciousness they are connected to.
Dietas require dedication. Traditionally done in the jungle, they could last weeks or months depending on what was deemed necessary by the plant and/or the shaman overseeing the diets. If someone was doing a deep apprenticeship or training to become a curandero they could even spend years in some dietas. So depending on the intention of the person who is dieting, there can be an intense level of commitment involved.
How Master Plant Dietas Have Evolved Today
shamans and healers of the jungle now participate in this incredible practice. Many retreat centers now offer dietas with numerous plants both in the Amazon and across the world. While they are usually not as strict as the traditional methods, they offer more comfort and support to people looking to reconnect with nature and themselves.
As the dieta has moved into being practiced in different regions, the process has also adapted to the people in those places and what they have access to. While the Amazonian master plants are often still dieted, the master plants of the lands these people live on are being honored and heard through this process now as well. While it is not uncommon to see diets being done with Bobinsana, Ajo Sacha, or Cacao across the globe, you will also find plants like Rose, Lavender, Mugwort, or Cedar being recognized and worked with through this pathway.
Plant intelligence exists all over the globe, so while it is important to honor the traditions and people who carried this practice for centuries if not millennia, there’s also something magical about how it has spread in a way that is inviting people everywhere to reconnect to the wisdom and intelligence of the plant wisdom and consciousness around them. One caveat I would give here is that there are some jungle master plants that are really challenging and would be best dieted in the jungle under the guidance of someone trained and very familiar with that plant. Some things are best kept and protected in the jungle.
Some people also still do longer diets of months in length, but shorter dietas of weeks or even days are common as well. It may seem right to assume that longer is better, this is not always the case. Shorter diets can not only also be powerful, sometimes the plant will get as much work done in less time, so they can be more intense. That is not always the case of course, but I have found the plants will pack what they want to share into what time they have with you. You can always diet the same plant more than once too thereby continuing to deepen that relationship with them without having to take months off of work which is impossible for many people.
From Jungle Tradition to Global Reconnection
From this perspective, I would say that considering the healing impact that dietas can have, the more people who are able to come to this work and reconnection with plant consciousness in a respectful and disciplined but assessable way, the better. The earth will be better for it as well as the plants that live here with us. It is of course important to personally honor the indigenous knowledge and practice that has been protected and passed to us and to work with centers and practitioners that also honor and preserve the ceremonial and cultural integrity of this practice.
But bringing this ancient wisdom into contemporary practice is also crucial in the world today. Not only do people need the wisdom of the plants, the plants and the earth need us to remember it so that we also remember our interconnection with them. In many ways, the health and preservation on earth can be greatly impacted by more people learning to listen to the spirits of nature again.
Lastly, modern practitioners are now widely offering integration services as a part of their master plant dieta packages. This allows participants to receive support and guidance in taking the plants teachings and merging them into their daily lives. It’s not enough to just hear the messages from the plants. We need to weave them into our lives, our habits, our interactions with each other and nature. By using the process to change the way we live and interact with each other and nature, we honor those who carried this tradition through time for us.
Personal Experiences of Plant Apprenticeship
Having both done many dietas now myself as well as holding them for others for years, I have witnessed nothing short of miracles with these majestic beings. I have followed Mugwort as she designed a cord cutting ceremony for someone I was holding a dieta with her for. Rose has healed matrilineal lines both back to the great grandmothers but also forward when the mother heals and changes the lives of her daughters. Often it may take multiple dietas to really get into something really deep, but I have watched a beautiful soul who was on the brink of no longer wanting to be here with us finally find hope and connection.
Living Testimony: Transformation Through Sacred Union
Personally, I had a challenging dieta with mapacho where I could only move more and more slowly. It actually got to the point where I was laid out on my mat and could not get up. I was struggling to understand what he was trying to communicate through this until he finally let me have the reason. He said you have to move so slow until it is slow enough that every since movement, every thought and action are done with deep intention. Every step on the earth, every breath, every single moment with the deepest intention. We say life is a ceremony, but in that moment Mapacho showed me the absolute truth behind that statement.
Powerful clearings are also possible. When I dieted Douglas Fir, he brought through the message that there was a blockage in my throat that had “been there since antiquity” and that I had carried for many many lives. He began working on it, with some other plants in assistance. A few months later, I opened a Rose dieta in which we also invited Kali Maa in to support. The week prior to opening that dieta I got increasingly sick with fever, sweating, lethargy, and congestion. Right before opening that diet, I sat with hapeh, and then the moment that it opened Kali and Rose came in and pulled that blockage right out. I spit a mass I will not describe into my bucket and knew that Kali swords and Rose thorns had removed the blockage completely.
I have witnessed so many incredible stories and transformations of all kinds for myself and others through the practice of dieta. In all of my studies, travels, and practices, nothing has been as expansive or supportive as this process. Perhaps the best part is that the plants that you work with become your allies for life. The relationship you cultivate through this union carries on, and having that kind of connection and support is irreplaceable.
Walking the Ancient Path
Master plant dietas are growing in popularity, but they are not trends. They are a living legacy and ancient spiritual lineages that connect humans to the deepest intelligence of the Earth. Just as they supported the indigenous in all aspects of survival in the jungle as well as personal growth, these same plant beings are coming to join us in union now.
They are still reaching out to us in our fast paced world to invites us to slow down, listen, and remember who we are in relationship with the living forest. Reconnecting to the plant spirits and to the earth may be what continues our own growth and survival as a species here on this beautiful planet and in better balance with her.
If you feel called to explore the sacred path of dieta, I would love to talk to you about our offerings. We regularly have groups posted in the courses section of this website, and multiple coaches including myself also hold them 1:1.
